Today the New England Patriots are the happiest team in the NFL.
This year's Super Bowl wasn't the most exciting game. It had its share of dubious records and miscues. But I enjoyed watching it for the incredible leadership lessons that were distilled into a one-hour master class on elite performance.
The most vivid lesson was that morale follows mission.
High-performing teams are happiest only after achieving something of great difficulty and significance following a sustained period of hard, focused effort.
Many times in my career, I heard the argument that if we make the team happy now, excellence in mission accomplishment will follow. And 'happiness now' usually takes the form of working less on the mission.
I'm certain that the Patriots didn't have the fewest practices in the NFL this year.
I'm positive their strength and conditioning workouts weren't the easiest in the NFL.
I'm sure they didn't spend fewer hours studying film to make room for more relaxation.
Instead, they maintained singular focus on mission from the end of their loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII until Tom Brady took the snap and knelt on the one-yard-line to win Super Bowl LIII last night.
And there is no doubt that the team with the highest morale in the NFL today is the New England Patriots.
They will enjoy their victory very briefly. And then they will get to work on number seven.
It's what leaders do.
